Not sure if this is going to help anyone else, but I had just given up when I remembered that I had another copy (DVD) of windows. If the removable USB drive isn't being detected it may be that your BIOS doesn't support booting from USB. Maybe it has a difference? Windows install restarted my computer a couple times before finishing and each time I pulled the usb stick out until I saw the installation screen and then put back in.
