I've got readouts on my Sidebar that are supposed to tell me if they're doing anything, but they aren't obvious enough. Obviously (from my experience) it is possible for something like a bad CD-ROM or DVD drive to make the HD light stay on, something I would not have previously guessed.

i often leave my machine turned on with monitor off, plus my desktop mobo flashes the LED to let me know it's asleep rather than just off. When I disconnected it, the HD drive light went off. If you see your computer busy, it's possible it's downloading and possibly installing a new update. Worked for me.
