It would still read DVD's but not the Sony installation disc.
I once did this as a joke with an old CD ROM drive and PSU, connecting the CDROM headphone out to speakers and used it as a CD player. My DVD/CD-ROM drive can't read any audio CDs and DVDs. The only problem is that Device Manger still instists that I do not have a DVD-CD ROM drive so nothing new there. my problem also fix with your tutorial.
